Chippendale was the first furniture maker to create a catalogue of his designs. He called this ‘The Gentleman and Cabinet Makers Director’ and it was full of drawings of all the furniture that Chippendale could make. If you were a wealthy home owner in the Georgian period you could choose what you liked from the catalogue to put in your home. You could also mix and match designs and colours to fit in with your decoration and what was fashionable. Today we would use something like the IKEA catalogue to choose furniture for our home. Have a look at these pages from Chippendale’s catalogue and see if you can find anything similar in a modern furniture catalogue.
