Make a clay motif

You will need: air drying clay, clay tools, rolling pin, and a board. You can also print out some of the motifs that Chippendale used as inspiration for your design (click here to go to the motifs page). You might want to draw out your design before you start so that you know what it is going to look like and your clay doesn’t dry out!

Step 1 - Roll out a lump of clay on your board until it is about 1-2cm thick.

Step 2 - Cut this into a square tile of approximately 8cm by 8cm.

Step 3 - Use the rest of the clay to start making your motif.

Step 4 - Make a mixture of clay and water which you can use to 'glue' your motif to your tile as you go along.

Step 5 - Build up your design until it is finished.

Step 6 - If you like you can add some texture to the background using your tools.

Step 7 - Remove your tile from the board and leave it dry over night.

Keep your design bold and simple, especially if you want to gild it. It can sometimes take a few days for the clay to dry out fully.
